13-1938 Cris Alexander Prohibition Nude Rare History 35mm kodachrome slide photo
CollectionHero
Original 1/1 discovery with rare history in Kodak photography This is a barnyard estate discovery of 13 slides estimated from 1938-1941 photographed by Cris Alexander during the USA Nude Prohibition era. These are original 1/1 35mm Kodachrome photos that were not discovered or publicly viewed until after his death in 2012. This find is similar to of Alfred Chaney Johnston after his death in 1971 of Ziegfeld Follies Showgirls (black and white) except no commercial reproductions were made and they are in Color. Kodachrome was first released in 1935 as new technology with a 28 stage process only developed at the Kodak Lab. Color nude photography was illegal in America up until 1950s, which made it impossible to develop nude photos on the early year Kodachrome made in USA. These films were possibly developed after hours with a inside technician illegally, Kodachrome could not be processed by third parties due to expensive equipment. During the Great Depression leading to WW2 years the laws were very strict, possession or distribution of color nude photos could lead to jail time. With the poor economy many photographers continued to shoot in black and white. The early release of Kodachrome was quite expensive relative to the gold exchange rate, $3.50 per roll of 18, which converts to $11 a photo in today's price at $2000/oz. Kodachrome technology advanced in color in 1938. In this collection you can see 4 photos with a sepia tone, then the rest in true color. This shows it was taken around the transition period between 1938-1941. Cris Alexander was born in 1920, a young radio announcer and moved to New York City to open a photo studio in late 1930s. During this transition Cris was a Broadway actor and was noted to be close friends with biggest Hollywood stars of this generation. He later went into magazine photography and then worked with Andy Warhol as chief Photographer for his Interview magazine. Cris was not known to sell his photos as art, thus not recorded in big art galleries. A few of his peers from this generation (black and white) has sold originals of nude photography art in the 6-7 USD figure. This collection is possibly from his early career experiment. They can be seen taken in 2 types of indoor and 2 outdoor settings. The blue border Kodachrome is released from 1935-1939 and slide binders were available for aftermarket assembly (lower or higher quality glass encasement). The red border Kodachrome is stamped with his name C. Alexander Copyright 1941. There is another red border with a hand written initials of AX. The rest are in SVE slide binders and fall between this time frame. Few of the models represent similar looks to young Hollywood stars but not confirmed. The slide binders have old glass, a couple cracked, trapped particles, but can be cleaned up for a better picture. The slide scans were done with a Kodak scanner and unedited. The scan does have difficulty picking up high contrast light and photo may be viewed differently with the eye. The watermark will not be on the original photo. Kodak has special geometric coding on the film which can translate to the years it was taken. In order to view this, the slide binder has to be broken apart and located on the edge of film. I kept all photos in original condition and has not been cleaned. Cleaning and re-scanning would make a huge difference with improving the picture quality if you choose to do so, but there are also risks of damaging the picture quality with this process. The history of photography in America has progressed a lot in 170 years. Prior to the 1850s it was not common for women to have a photo taken showing any part of the leg, therefore wore long dresses down to shoes. In early years of technology it costed an average 1 week salary to have a photo taken. With high prices, similar to hand painted portraits, higher society were ones to have photographs taken. The strict laws in this generation did not allow women to publicly wear bikinis on the beach without having an enclosure around them. Fast forward to the 1930s, Nude photography was still very uncommon in America and more so taken in Europe. In the 1920s-30s the law still did not allow full face nudity in black and white, therefore likes of Edward Weston objectified the body without showing full expression of the face or vice versa. It wasn't until the 1950s full color nudity became legal in the USA for sale and distribution. Playboys first issue with Marilyn Monroe was in 1953. There are some photographers who first emerged with color out of Europe in the 1930s, such as John Everard, where there were less restrictions but not sold till a later date in USA. Color nude photos from this generation would not have a date or name attachment due to the risk of incarceration. There was a loophole to this law, which is pictorial art or hand drawings which became popular in 1930s with likes of Earl Moran. This technique is similar to rasterizing, reducing the sharpness to appear as an drawn illustration. There is one sepia tone photo that has appearance of Carmen Miranda prior to fame. There were few female hispanic stars in broadway during this time. A facial recognition expert has examined the photo without a conclusion. The other possibility is Carmen Miranda sister who is seen along side her performing in some photoshoots. Some models from this collection may appear nude in other collections (not these exact photos) although they were not published on the Red border Kodachrome or Original 1930s blue border without the ready mount marking. They were reproduced at a later date by private companies after the prohibition era. One indication is the sharpness of photo is reduced when reproduced. These photos listed were scanned with an amateur Kodak scanner and the resolution can be much improved with a professional scanner. Please inquire for best method of shipping insurance to your location prior to bid. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

WELLS FARGO ORIGINAL WOODEN TREASURE BOX WITH ORIGINAL LOCK & KEY -RARE!
CollectionHero
Gold dust, gold bars, gold coins, legal papers, checks, and drafts traveled in the famous green treasure boxes, stored under the stagecoach driver's seat. Loaded with bullion, they could weigh from 100 to 150 lbs. "About as much as one likes to shoulder to and from the stages," wrote John Q. Jackson, Wells Fargo agent, in an 1854 letter to his father. Because they carried the most valuable assets of the West, these sturdy boxes of Ponderosa pine, oak, and iron were more prized by highway bandits than anything else. But the real security of the treasure boxes came from who was guarding them — the Wells Fargo shotgun messengers. They were "the kind of men you can depend on if you get into a fix," according to Wells Fargo detective Jim Hume. If thieves were foolhardy enough to try and steal a treasure box in transit, they would find themselves staring down the barrel of a sawed-off shotgun, loaded with 00 buckshot, possibly held by Wyatt Earp himself. Despite these efforts, there was a masked highwayman who managed to rob 27 stagecoaches — the infamous Black Bart. Wells Fargo detectives eventually caught up with him. He served his four years in San Quentin and then disappeared forever. For auction is one of these original and authentic Wells Fargo treasure Boxes which was made to strict specifications by J. Y. Ayer Co. in San Francisco. It's size is 9-3/4" x 20" x 12". Made of pine wood, with steel rims which was used to prolong the life of the box, and to protect the box from wear and tear, and to deter robbery and pilferage. There are no leather straps on the handles on corners which were common from use during the 1850s-1880s. All the steel brackets are attached and the hinges are in working order. The original green paint is still very vibrant, and the words "WELLS FARGO & CO" painted in white on the front panel still retains it's original legibility. There any no restorations of any kind to the treasure box. Included is a genuine "WF & CO" hardened-steel padlock with the original key with "W.F. & CO." stamped on and chain. An original shipping waybill listing various locations is still attached to the inside lid of the box. Any so-called "Wells Fargo treasure box" that departs from this appearance is undoubtedly a fake. The company issued many other boxes, such as Letter Boxes, "Old Horse" Boxes, Messenger's Kit Boxes, and Packing Trunks, to name a few. This treasure box is one of the most exquisite looking ones I've seen in a long time. This treasure box came out of the collection of Parker Lyon Pony Express Museum and purchased from Greg Martin with a letter of authenticity. Don't miss out on this very rare and hard to find Wells Fargo Treasure Box, one of the finest I've ever owned. Winning bidder will pay $114.35 shipping and handling and insurance west of Mississippi, $189.73 to the Eastern states. Free pickup in San Francisco available from seller.

A101 BU1123 Uber Rare Asilid Robber Fly beetles in Burmese Amber Myanmar ~99mya
CollectionHero
eBay TerraTreasures and Adventures101 offer this authentic Dominican Amber gemstone ______________ some photos of Burma amber and Burma amber mining (Myanmar Burmese Amber or BurmiteBurmese Amber (Burmite) is from northern Myanmar, it is the only Cretaceous amber deposit in the world that is exploited commercially, as well as the first to have been studied scientifically. Burmite is 98.8 million years old and has been used primarily in carvings for at least two millennia by Chinese peoples. The age of 98.8 million years establishes an earliest Cenomanian age for the fossilized inclusions. The age also indicates that a volcanic eruption occurred at 98.8 million years ago in the vicinity of the Hukawng Valley. The deposits in the Kachin state of northern Myanmar, are very productive (an estimated 83 tons were exported between 1898 and 1940), and some amber pieces are very large there is a 15 kg stone in the Natural History Museum in London and recently recovered pieces are larger. The color of Burmese amber stones vary from a transparent yellow to a highly desirable deep red, the amber resists fracturing, is relatively hard (1.2 times harder than Baltic amber), and it receives a beautiful glassy polish. Burmite mining lapsed from just before the independence of Burma from Britain in 1947, and did not resume until the late 1990s. The greatest value of burmite, however is scientific. Photographs of our specimens have appeared in National Geographic, Nature, Science, Scientific American, Discover, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times and others. We have been featured in BBC’s production, PaleoWorld's The Amber Hunters. We offer authentic museum quality Dominican and Burmese (Burmite) Amber display specimens Dominican Republic where we have chiseled beautiful amber gemstones out of the lignite layers deep in the amber mines north of Santiago. We have excavated in the Palo Quemado and Los CaCaos blue amber mines and also in La Nueva Toca and the world famous La Toca amber mines way up in the mountains north of Santiago. For many years we have extensively collected mid Cretaceous New Jersey amber in the Raritan formation of central New Jersey and have traveled many times to collect late Cretaceous and early Paleocene amber in the Hanna formation of eastern Wyoming. We have collected mid Cretaceous amber in the Black Creek formation of eastern North Carolina and we have spent weeks collecting mid Cretaceous amber in the northern most Tundra of Alaska. Some of our collecting trips have been in October of 2003 to the western Aleutian Islands some 1000 miles west of Anchorage to explore and collect Miocene amber, August of 2004 and April of 2006 we were back in the Dominican Republic to collect Miocene amber from the Palo Quemado amber mines which have recently closed due to the miners finding little amber, we were back to the Dominican Republic in April of 2006 to video in the La Toca amber mines, and in August of 2007 we excavated in La Toca and La Bucara. We’ve collected Eocene amber in western Indian in the Cambay amber formation. We've done excavations in the Dominican Republic in 2012, 2014, and 2016. We did 2 collecting trips to a Eocene amber deposit in the southern United States in 2017 and in late summer 2018 we revisited a historic amber site in the south east that we've collected at in the 1990's. We were at the 8th International Conference on Fossil Insects, Arthropods & Amber in Santo Domingo Dominican Republic in April 2019 where there were many amber/insect researchers from all over the world there and some gave fantastic talks on fossil insects and amber - great stuff! We were last back in the Dominican Republic in September 2019 before the pandemic at the Los CaCaos and La Cumbre amber mines. Most recently we returned to a historic Eocene amber deposit in the southern United States in May of 2021. We have many trips coming up despite the pandemic restrictions. We have donated many hundreds of amber specimens to museums in the United States and have several dozen new species of insects in amber named after us. We have examined several thousand specimens of rough Burmese amber and have prepped many new Burmese fossil amber specimens. We have traveled to Europe with colleagues to examine unusual spectacular Dominican Amber specimens in private collections and we consider the amber curators of the museums in Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and New York City our friends. Exploring for and collecting amber along with the examination and research of amber is our passion. top (Condition: Brand New)
